i am on mtx etc 2yrs now and was out in the sun easter weekend not to sit as i am not a lover of the heat,i was pottering about alot, i ended up with both my arms looking and feeling like bubble wrap, scarey, i spoke to rhummy nurse and was told to cover up,use sun screen(50+) or stay indoors or shade,i was told when started mtx about eyes, liver and hair not sun damage, now i am worried about my skin,i am off to spain in july but i always stay in the shade or go indoors when sun at its peak,my excuse for a lie down, has anyone had this on mtx and is there any thing else to be aware of or is it a personal thing.

Hi Dorothy

Methotrexate does increase sensitivity to the sun. You should use a high factor sun cream when in the sun and avoid strong sunlight. It's also recommended that a light barrier cream is used at all times (even in winter) to protect the skin from exposure.

In a phototoxic reaction, drug molecules absorb the energy of a specific UV wavelength, which causes the molecule to undergo a chemical change and emit energy that damages surrounding tissues. Usually displaying as redness or sunburn.

Photo sensitivity can also be caused by Hydroxychloroquine, Sulfasalasine and Myocrisin (Gold), as well as Methotrexate.

Not what you want to hear but better to be safe than sorry.
Here's a link to a blog I wrote on 'Photosensitivity and RA Drugs' which you will find on the NRAS Health Unlocked site. If you can't access it for any reason let me know and I'll copy it here!

Hope this is helpful,

It is really important not to get too much sun. I have been in the garden for just an hour today and even though I have smothered on Factor 30, my wretched feet have blistered and I can't put my shoes on. Enjoy your holiday, but try to be very disciplined about covering yourself up - and stay in the shade as much as possible.

There's been recent post on the forum about sun and MTX, so a few weeks ago when we went away I took the advice given and got my factor 50 out. Got hold of it and tried to squeeze some out. Guess what???? I couldn't. Not to be beaten I put it down on the work surface with the end hanging over the side. Pressed hard with the palm of my hand and out came a load. It was Boots own brand (the sort that white washes you), most of what was in my hand ended up on a tissue and in the bin. I then tried to rub it it but arms just didn't want to play ball. Did manage it in the end after a lot of effort.

What I do now is use the one that you spray out. I put it down on a surface, put my right hand to catch what comes out while I am pressing the spray thing down with my left hand. For those of you that have read my acceptance thread......another silly little thing that I now find difficult to do.

Just want to add that I did ask my consultant about sun and MTX and he did say that it doesn't affect everyone.

Hi Paula

I have to say that the sun doesn't seem to affect me at all but I do go brown straight away. Maybe it only affects fair skin. I suppose it would seem sensible that fair skin would burn more but maybe someone on the forum will say otherwise. Maybe I am just lucky in that respect.

I'm on hydroxy and mtx but as yet haven't had a problem with the sun. On the contrary, I had to leave my legs in the sun for the whole of the easter weekend just to get a tinge of colour. I tend to stay in the shade normally but I really wanted to get rid of the pasty winter white legs.

I think , as with everything , that you need to take into account the biggest variable of all ... the patient!.

This variable is the reason why we are all on different drugs , why different drugs effect different people , and probably why some will suffer to a greater degree from photo sensitivity than others .
Ultimately as a patient we listen to our own bodies and are best placed , with information and a certain amount of direction, to make choices that are good for us as individuals .

We are all different yet somewhat similar :)

Sue

You've given me a right giggle..........leaving your legs out in the sun all Easter. I've got visions of a pair of legs all by themselves in the garden. You've have well and truly been legless all Easter.LOL LOL LOL

Dorothy

I went to Spain July 08 and 09. I coped with the sun well, it really wasn't as hot as I thought it would of been, I wasn't on MTX mind you at the time, just SLZ. Just keep plastering yourself in factor 50, sit in the shade as much as you can and try to keep out of it when it's really hot.

Have a lovely time.

Hi Rich

You have hit the nail on the head. We are desparate for someone to give us an answer that makes us feel better and really because we are all different we are not going to get one. Nevertheless, we will continue to ask and choose the answer that makes us feel better. We live in hope.
